When I was considering adding this seven-spot ladybird to a mug, I began thinking about how amusing it would be for this mug to be given to the '<em>lady of the house<\/em>'.<\/p><p><\/p><p>The gendering of the 'ladybird' irrespective of the insects gender is just as absurd as arguments against the correct use of pronouns. The defence of the English language is often used by the more conservative amongst us to argue against honouring pronouns. A <strong>male<\/strong> ladybird is an amusing oxymoron especially relevant when thinking about all I do with Birds Can Fly; to my rather traditional illustrations to the often gender-bending gentle references . In this context a humble mug with an insect illustration can subtly poke fun at those determined to resist the flexibility of the English language and the diversity of identity and sexuality.
